USCG – reminder to replace older EPIRBs

The US Coast Guard issued a press release reminding mariners that older model Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs) that broadcast on 121.5 MHz or 243 MHz will not be monitored by satellite as of February 1, 2009.  Effective that date, the satellites will only monitor for radio beacons broadcasting on 406 MHz.  Some of the newer EPIRBs are equipped with embedded GPS, which will automatically signal the location of the distress.

Changes at Diversey Yacht Club for 2008

It is with regret that we inform you that Val Lev, after many years of service, will not be in our employ this year.  We wish Val and his family our best in their future endeavors.  We welcome Patrick O'Malley who will be joining our staff and who will assume Val's responsibilities at the club.

As you may already know, our harbor master Luke Pippen will no longer be at Diversey Harbor.  Luke has been reassigned to Belmont Harbor, he will be missed and we wish him the best (hope Luke can deal with those sail boaters).  Luke will be replaced by John Massey who was the assistant harbor master at Burnham Harbor last year.

On a more positive note, Gus Anton will be returning as our Galley Operator for the 2008 season.  Gus is already making plans for the upcoming season and has prepared a totally new menu which includes an excellent "Catering Section."  Welcome back Gus!  click here to view menu.

Chicago Air and Water Show Expanded

It was announced that the 50th Annual Chicago Air & Water Show will expand to three days.  On Friday, August 15, the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and the U.S. Army Golden Knights Parachute Team will headline the show along with a surprise lineup that will be announced at a later date. In previous years Friday has been designated as a rehearsal for the big show on that weekend. This year the Blue Angels will kick off the activities at 3:00 p.m. followed by the Golden Knights Parachute Team. Immediately following the headliners there will be a FREE concert at the North Avenue Beach Boat House (talent details to be announced at a later date). The night show will conclude at 9:00 p.m. with a spectacular fireworks display.  On Saturday, August 16, and Sunday, August 17, the air show runs from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. both days.
